FIREとの出会い――人生を自由にする目標
僕も同じ想いを抱いていました。そして人生のヒントとして出会ったのが、**FIRE（Financial Independence, Retire Early）**の考え方です。
「遊んで暮らしながらお金もある生活が可能なんだ」と知った瞬間の衝撃は今でも鮮明です。このときから、僕はFIREを目標に人生をデザインすることに決めました。
資産運用の重要性も学びました。NISAやインデックス投資を活用し、長期・分散・低コストで資産を増やすことがFIRE達成の土台になると知ったのです（詳細は別記事で解説予定）。
しかし、サラリーマンの給料だけでFIREを達成するのは正直厳しい。自由な時間とお金を手に入れるには、副業で資金を作り、それを株式投資や不動産投資など、寝ていてもお金が入ってくる仕組みに回す必要がありました。
副業探しの迷走と本せどりとの出会い
高校生の頃からヤフオクでバイク部品や中古品を売買していた経験から、せどりは副業として取り組みやすい選択肢でした。
最初はリーファという有料ツールで新品せどりに挑戦。楽しかったものの、収益は不安定で再現性に欠けました。
次に、としさんというユーチューバーのカルタナを試し、単C薄利多売戦略を実践。しかし、近所のブックオフに行っても本が多すぎて、どの棚から手をつけるべきか全くわからず、すぐに挫折しました。
そんなときに出会ったのが、タローさんの本せどりです。仕入れの考え方や立ち回りが明確で、これまでの経験を活かせる内容でした。

体験同行で学んだリアルな現場力
在職中にタローさんのコンサルを受講し、初めての同行仕入れに挑戦。横浜ビブレのブックオフや周辺店舗を回りながら、手取り足取りノウハウを学びました。

個人で稼ぐ力の重要性
ここで大事なのは、個人で稼ぐ力です。
個人で稼ぐ力とは、自分の裁量でコントロールでき、やる気がそのまま成果に直結する力のこと。副業で資金を作り、それを株式投資や不動産投資など、寝ていてもお金が入ってくる仕組みに回すことで、自分の未来を自分でデザインできるようになります。
この力を身につけることで、FIREを現実的な目標に変えることができるのです。
副業実践と成果
副業禁止のため、実践は妻が担当。僕が学んだノウハウを共有し、二人三脚で挑戦しました。
- 初めは薄利（1冊あたり300円程度）からスタート
- 仕入れ判断やジャンル選定が改善され、安定利益を確保
- 在庫積み上げと価格改定で単品赤字も次の仕入れ資金として循環
その結果、2023年には資産5,000万円を達成し、退職を決意。
当初は2037年に1億円で完全FIREを目指していましたが、自分の稼ぐ力・行動力・好奇心に賭けて思い切って退職しました。
2025年10月現在、※純資産は7500万円を超え、会社経営者としても順調に成果を上げています。振り返れば、この選択は結果として成功した人生の一歩だったのです。

Discovering FIRE — The Goal That Frees Your Life
I felt the same way. The turning point came when I discovered FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early).
I still vividly remember the shock when I realized, “It’s possible to live freely while having enough money to enjoy life.” From that moment, I decided to design my life with FIRE as the goal.
At the same time, I learned the importance of asset management. Using NISA and index investing, I discovered that long-term, diversified, low-cost investing is the foundation for achieving FIRE (more details in a separate article).
However, relying solely on a salaried income makes FIRE realistically very difficult. To gain both freedom and financial security, I needed to earn extra income through side hustles and channel it into investments like stocks or real estate, which generate money even while I sleep.
The Side Hustle Search and Discovering Book Reselling
Since high school, I had experience buying and selling used motorcycle parts and other items on Yahoo Auctions. So, reselling (or “sedori”) seemed like a feasible side hustle.
I first tried new-item reselling with a paid tool called Reefa. While it was enjoyable, the results were unstable and hard to reproduce.
Next, I tried the strategy from a YouTuber named Toshi, using a free trial of the Karutana tool for thin-margin, high-volume sales. But even visiting local Book Off stores, I had no clue which shelves to start from, and after only a little effort, I couldn’t find any hits and gave up.
Then I discovered Taro’s book reselling method. His approach was clear, practical, and perfectly aligned with my previous experience.
Hands-On Learning Through Accompanied Sourcing
While still employed, I enrolled in Taro’s consulting program and participated in my first accompanied sourcing trip. Visiting multiple Book Off stores around Yokohama Vivre, I learned hands-on strategies directly from Taro:
- How to read Keepa charts to track price trends and popular items
- One-day intensive sourcing trips where I discovered hits even in unfamiliar categories
- Receiving some of the books Taro sourced during the trip, giving a real-life sense of the process
- Learning everything from packing and listing to inventory management at his office
I also learned the importance of inventory management and strategic losses:
- Building inventory as a team and using individual-item losses as funding for the next purchase
- Understanding that price adjustments and sourcing fluctuations are part of the strategy
- Focusing on overall cash flow rather than just individual book profits
Through this experience, I realized that even if individual books incur losses, the team can accumulate profits overall. I also learned that Taro’s method of earning 300,000 yen per month with just two hours of daily work is truly achievable.
The Importance of Personal Earning Power
The key lesson is the value of personal earning power.
Personal earning power means having control over your own work and seeing your motivation directly impact your results. By creating funds through a side hustle and channeling them into investments like stocks or real estate that earn money passively, you can design your own financial future.
This power turns FIRE from an abstract concept into a realistic goal.
Side Hustle in Action and Achievements
Since my employer prohibited side businesses, my wife executed the work while I shared the knowledge I had gained. Together, we refined the approach:
- Starting with small profits (around 300 yen per book)
- Improving sourcing decisions and category selection for consistent earnings
- Using inventory management and price adjustments to recycle individual-item losses into future purchases
As a result, by 2023, I had accumulated 50 million yen in assets and decided to retire from my job.
Initially, I aimed for 100 million yen by 2037 for complete FIRE, but I decided to retire earlier, relying on my personal earning power, energy, and curiosity.
As of 2025, my net worth exceeds 70 million yen, and as a business owner, I am achieving solid results. Looking back, this decision was a crucial step toward a successful life.
